How to earn respect and establish authority |
||
People are funny creatures. We are all born with intuition and inner spiritual tools to discern our path, and to tell when someone is not being truthful with us. We have wisdom and can ask for more from God at any time, yet we will most likely choose to believe gossip and things reported in the news, without questioning their validity. In fact, it's been known for years that people believe most anything as long as they see it in writing - the printed word. On the other hand, we all respect people who don't listen to gossip and who weigh evidence carefully before making decisions. We pride ourselves on whatever ability we might have to hold off speaking or reacting to a problem before we hear the whole story, even if we have very little of that ability. Instinctively we know that the ideal human being is one who is wise, calm, fair, quiet, honest, enthusiastic and works harder than is required, or who gives 110% when 75% would do. You've heard that in the business world these qualities are not appreciated and that you should go ahead and "get yours" regardless of what other people's opinions are, but I'm glad to be able to tell you that this is not true. These qualities are still VERY important and even if at times it seems you will not be rewarded for your hard work, the universe (or God) NEVER misses. Everything you do, and WHY you do it, is recorded and the universe will measure out to you exactly what you've put out for others. The Bible is full of encouragement for people not to do their good deeds only for the sake of what mankind can reward them for, but to do it for God and He will reward man openly. Knowing these things then, we can pattern our behavior from the qualities listed above, and we can even take advantage of the fickle nature of our fellow man. In business, as well as in our private lives, we are constantly "marketing" ourselves and what we stand for. Your life is an advertisement, and people will check what you say against what you do, for confirmation that you are "real" and to be trusted. We all seek a cheap and effective method of marketing our goods or services to our fellow man to make our living, and one of those methods is totally free. The news reporters of your local paper, radio stations and television stations all around the world must come up with fresh content daily for their ever hungry audience. Ezines and newsletters by the hundreds of thousands are popping up in the Internet who also all need weekly or monthly content to stay in business. However if you've ever tried to call up a reporter and sell your business, you may have noticed it doesn't work that simply. They tend to turn a deaf ear to self marketers. For either real life news or online newsletters, you can produce a product to give away for free that tell information people need. You talk about what you know, and what you're passionate about. In the real world, you can have a contest, or a community project, a party or free lessons to get in the news. On the Internet, it's almost the same. Write articles that give the information, with a short paragraph at the end that tells the reader who you are and where to find more information about your services. By doing this, you are establishing yourself as an "expert" in the field you are talking about. This becomes the "life" and passion that you show the world, and everyone will look to you for answers when they have questions on that subject. NOW comes the interesting part. As news happens internationally, every TV and radio station, paper and tabloid must change its programming to offer comments and local info relating to the breaking news story. Where will they get that information? From past articles and taped features, and by looking down their list of "experts" in that field that they can call in locally to discuss what has happened. You must have noticed how that happens. There is a bombing somewhere involving an air plane, and every station will bring in airport experts. Anyone from federal FAA agents to the janitor who cleans your tiny local airport. YOU can be that local expert, simply by offering your expertise to the public in samples and articles, free lessons and debates. You won't get paid to appear, but it will give you so much more free advertising and credibility in whatever business you have chosen. (Don't forget using business cards and magnetic car signs, ads in your local pennysaver, and offering to be the speaker at local organizational meetings.) Another method to become an expert in your field is to self publish a book. Ebooks are very easy, free to publish online and there are many outlets on the Internet to sell your work. Clickbank, Booklocker and Ebay are just 3 possibilities. Ebooks are profitable, enduring and are transmitted around the world in an instant, finding their way onto millions of home PCs.
